2023
Gear Up Expedition

EQUIPPED FOR ADVENTURE

The new Expedition comes in three unique colours, representing the different types of terrain that travellers can choose to explore.

Rapeseed Field’ is a bright yellow-on-green OD paint scheme that evokes lush meadows filled with green leaves and yellow flowers.

The spectacular orange on blue ‘Polar Dawn’ recalls a fiery sunrise in the Arctic Circle and is a tribute to Gear Up’s Siberian roots.

‘Ember Flame’ – a striking terracotta on silver – suggests a cityscape of steel, glass, asphalt and bright lights, and is designed to remind riders that adventures can be had anywhere, even in the backyard.

Last but not least… the slanted line along the sidecar and fuel tank that separates the colours tilts 23.5 degrees, the same as the axial tilt of the earth. It’s a little Easter egg from our designer, a tribute to the Expedition’s ability to tackle any terrain and the slightly crazy character of the Ural®.

Prototype Electric

A ural Charged Literally

Ural Motorcycles has completed the first phase of development of an all-electric sidecar motorbike. The electric prototype was built on the existing single wheel drive cT chassis using Zero Motorcycles’ proprietary propulsion system package (motor, batteries, controller and other components). California-based ICG developed the overall design and was responsible for manufacturing the initial prototype. Zero Motorcycles also provided the necessary engineering support during the development and testing of the prototype that made this project possible.

“You’ll feel like you’re in stealth mode, silently approaching the loudest idling cars at traffic lights. And you won’t have to shout when you want to talk to your passenger. It’s like the hum of a magic carpet compared to the vibrations and tractor bellow of Ural’s legendary fuel models.” -Good Spark Garage

Proof of concept was the main objective of this project. We went through several iterations, looking for the best configuration of the electric propulsion system package. One of the main challenges was to find the optimal location for the batteries while maintaining the passenger comfort, storage capacity and stability characteristic of Ural sidecars.

For the time being, the company has no immediate plans to produce any all-electric models. Ultimately, the decision will be based on market research and feedback from consumers and industry experts. We estimate that, once the final design is approved, series production would take about 24 months to ramp up. The design of the production motorbike would incorporate the latest battery technology and charging options.

NEW IN 2021/2022

ACHIEVING EURO5 CERTIFICATION IS AN IMPORTANT MILESTONE FOR URAL, BUT WHAT EXACTLY HAS CHANGED?

The two main challenges for Ural were emissions and noise, and this became the main technical objective.

The switch to Keihin EFI in 2019 paved the way for the development of the necessary updates to meet the very strict requirements of Euro5.

The exhaust system had to be completely redesigned and now consists of a custom-made stainless steel two-into-one system with a large, high-end single rear muffler. This significantly reduces noise and also increases ground clearance, a welcome advantage for those who venture off-road.

The exhaust system now contains two precatalysts and two large diameter main catalysts. A built-in “vacuum valve” is actuated by engine vacuum, controlled by the ECU via a vacuum relay, allowing rapid warm-up of the catalysts at low rpm and full unrestricted power at higher rpm. The Keihin intake bodies had to be adapted to provide vacuum intakes to support this functionality.

The pistons have recently been redesigned to increase the compression ratio by 20%. They are still gravity cast from NASA388 aluminum/silica alloy, with a hard anodized crown and top annular groove. Various applications of high-tech coatings on the piston skirts, ring grooves and rings, as well as a phosphate-coated pin, reduce internal friction. Precision machining and close tolerances contribute to longer life.

The center stand has been completely redesigned to make it easier for you to get on and off the bike safely, whether you’re in the shop or heading out on an adventure.

All of these features will be offered as standard on the 2021 Ural Euro5 models and new Ural owners will undoubtedly benefit from this wide range of mandatory technical improvements.

New two-in-one exhaust system with high-mounted silencer (Euro5 compliant)

Upgraded intake manifolds with barbed vacuum ports

High compression pistons

Forged aluminum front swingarm

All-new rear brake system utilizing a two-piston Brembo caliper and independent mechanical parking brake caliper

New center stand

Heidenau tires as standard
